Learning is becoming.
No successful people were born successful. They built themselves into successful people.
At birth, we are all the same. One brain, four limbs, completely new to the world.
What splits us into groups (or classes, if you will) occurs after birth- education.
Yes, some people have certain privileges since they were born. For example, a more affluent family, living in a better area, seeing more well-educated people so they pick up desirable triats through osmosis…
But you should be able to see that the starting point is still education.
Why are some people more affluent, if trace back to before civilisation? Was it force? Well, force may be involved, but in order to gather force which involves persuading people, you need intelligence, i.e. a brain capable of thinking the right things right.
“Well,” you may say, “then it’s innate intelligence.”
Well my friend, please step out of your victim mindset and focus on what you can actually control, shall we?
And you know what? Talent means nothing if without education.
Imagine you are a super intelligent individual but you have never received any form of education, not even exposure to other human beings, nor animals.
Will you be able to learn to walk, speak, hunt for food, etc.?
No! You will not even be able to survive!
And if you insists in the significance of “iNnaTe InTelLigence” I suggest you read the work of Dr. Carol Dwerk, “mindset”, cuz one blog post can’t change your belief system like reading a ton of books can.
Afterall, if you are serious with changing your life and successfully learning whatever you want so you can become that dream version of yourself, no work is too hard to do.
So let’s move on to how to learn.
You need the manual for the brain (on how to learn)
It may come to your surprise that there is a whole body of research and evidence-based books about learning how to learn.
There are even a ton of courses, paid or free.
Yet, schools, which are places we go to learn, are not teaching us how to learn.
You are given this brain, which is insanely powerful that it can achieve whatever you want if you use it right.
It’s like having magic just by having this brain in your skull!
However, you don’t know how to use it. No one had ever taught you.
It’s like you don’t know the correct way of rubbing the magical lamp so the genius won’t come out.
And you said to yourself, “perhaps it’s just an ordinary lamp not a magical one.” (Translation: “perhaps I am just an ‘ordinary’ (mediocre) person who will never achieve anything worthwhile in this life”.)
Guess what?
With such belief and self-fulfilling prophecy, this is what you get now.
When you’re supposed to be living the life of your dreams.
Having that dream body. Starting that business. Making friends with high-quality people. Contributing to humanity. Generating a ton of cash!
Whatever life is supposed to look for you.
Take a few seconds to think about this: What do you want out of this life?
What do you want to achieve?
What do you want to create?
How do you want to be described?
How do you want people to remember you?
Visualise yourself being the person you always wanted to be, having everything you want.
Really look at it. Smell it. Touch it.
How do you feel?
That’s a life that you are SUPPOSED to have. It indeed is!
Your mind is the key to everything you want.
If you can conquer the mind, you can conquer the world (or, your mind can conquer the world for you!).
Conquering the mind
The first step is to ditch your limiting beliefs and replace them with empowering ones.
The truth is, you CAN learn ANYTHING- as long as you are genuinely interested and committed (aka willing to put in effort) in the thing you’re learning.
You know what? With effort you can even learn things that you’re not interested at all!
But I won’t recommend it because why would you do that??
For money? Oh, do you think money can buy you happiness?
Yes, in some form, but it will never fulfil you like devoting your life into something that you are genuinely interested.
It’s at a whole different level. It’s not just happiness, it is… Meaning. Purpose. Soul fulfilment.
And if you achieve these the money will simply come to you cuz you’re just too good at your genuine interest! People will pay you for that.
(Let’s be honest; anything of value can be trade for money, and people’s perception of “value” is so subjective!
If you think what you’re doing is of value and you would pay for it, there is certainly someone else who would do the same! You are special and unique, but not that isolated, my friend.)
Ok, let’s start.
Read the statements below loud to a mirror:
1- I can learn anything I set my mind to.
If you feel like you’re lying, read Dr. Carol Dwerk’s mindset and flip over the real-life examples there. Seriously, read it. It’s an investment that will generate you tremendous return that you loses from not reading it!
(Note: there are lots of information on growth vs fixed mindset online, are they are free. But I don’t think they can give you the mental awakening like the book does since the book offers you a ton of real-life famous examples. You will be astonished by how much YOU could achieve if you simply think (and do) things right!)
2- My memory is unlimited and strong.
Look up “long-term memory”.
It will never run out of storage (our lives are too short for that).
It can remember ANYTHING- if you do it right (hint: active recall, spaced repetition, memory techniques).
Every success is about doing the right things, in the right way, in the right order.
It’s no difference with cooking your favourite dish!
If your process is right, your product will be right.
If you failed, you MUST be doing something wrong (not because you’re mentally or physically retard like you judge yourself when you fail that test. NO.).
As a bonus, you can search “memory champions” in youtube to appreciate how powerful our (yes, including you, YOU) memory is.
3- I am proficient in learning, focusing, and energy management.
Oh, this you may feel like lying, and I agree! If you have never received any prior trainings.
But you CAN get good at them if you WANT to.
Don’t worry! I will go over them one by one in the following sections.
First thing first: the only right approach to learning
The only right approach to learning, “holisticity”.
To be holistic is to approach everything as “one”.
Everything (EVERYTHING) in this world is somewhat interrelated and interdependent.
You cannot treat each piece of knowledge as they were irrelevant with each other and hope that you will be able to apply them in a holistic approach.
If you want them to be holistic in your mind, approach them as they are hoslistic because they are!
You should also download Scott Young’s free ebook on “holistic learning”, which is the foundation mindset for any types of learning.
If you don’t learn “holistically”, basically everything you learned will be trapped in boxes and you will never be able to “mix them up” afterwards.
You can only see everything you learn as “one” if you start with this mindset.
Otherwise, everything you do will be futile (it is very painful and a hard pill to swallow, but it’s true.).
Second: get laser beam focus like a pro
Learning requires focused attention. Focused attention requires good mental state. It requries you to have a calm mind, that is not racing nor worrying about stupid things or people.
To achieve this state of mind, I suggest reading “don’t believe everything you think” by Joseph Nguyen.
It is an amazing book to start with if you desire a genuinely happy life- a kind of happiness that is sustainable, that is long-term.
After that, you need to know how your attention works.
I suggest reading Scott Young’s “the complete guide to working memory”, which is free for download in his blog!
You will gain MUCH clearer insight on how you get external information into your brain and will be able to do that MUCH more effectively and efficiently.
You will start to realise that you INDEED can master any skill you want, no matter how difficult it seems to be at the moment! (hint: any complex skill is just a result of chunking! And with pre-training, you can chunk as many as you want!)
A bonus for this is if you start to realise how your attention is stolen (by others or by you- attempting to multitask or allowing stupid things or people to distract you), you will know how to secure it, which means you get to protect your energy better!
So you will have more energy for the things that truly deserve it!
Like the things you enjoy! Your hobbies! Your new acquiring skill that you wished to be proficient at since you were an infant!!
That’s amazing!!
Third: Create your own learning project
Self-education is the way.
Yes, go to school if you want to, get that degree if you want to.
But NEVER, EVER depend on anyone (or any school) for your learning.
You should ALWAYS be at the driver seat when it comes to YOUR life, in any aspect, including learning.
No one can be responsible for your life.
You can blame everyone and everything, but at the end of the day, only you have to suffer the consequences.
Only you would care if you can’t live that dream life of yours.
Other people just go on with their lives and completely forget about you.
This is not about whether people are selfish; it is about individuality.
You are you, they are they. You are separate individuals.
You cannot be responsible for their lives (note: I am not saying you should do anything to harm others, please use some common sense and logic!) and they can’t be responsible for yours either.
You may think that the school or the curriculum “has the responsibility to make sure you learn well”, but the truth is it has no consequences if it cannot fulfil its responsibility. You have.
So, from today, be your own leader and rely on yourself only.
Do seek help from others, but at the same time realise that if anything goes wrong, it is you to suffer; so don’t slack off.
If this source of help is not working (doesn’t seem to solve your problem), seek another one. Ask different people. Google search. Read books. Use textbooks instead of lecture slides. Attend lectures from youtube other than your school’s lectures.
Do whatever, just make sure you are on the right track.
Do not expect anyone will do that for you.
If you don’t even care yourself enough to take care of your own life, who tf cares??
Once you realise that you are in control of your life and you have 100% responsibility (and ownership) of your own life (decisions, actions, words, emotions), you will feel so empowered and your mindset hence decisions hence your life- will start to change.
YOU will blossom.
I promise.
Conclusion
You are your dream person.
There is no other person you want to be on this earth, but the best version of you.
8 billion people on earth, yet you only want to be you- that version of you that you’ve ALWAYS wanted to be.
Life is short. You have no time to delay realising your dreams.
It takes time, effort, and a little bit of patience- but really, what else better option do you have?
You only live once and you don’t want to bring your potential and dreams into the grave yard.
You don’t want to be 90 years old looking back thinking that you’ve wasted this life; that you should have done this that; that you could have become this that.
No.
You do whatever it takes to realise your dreams.
You do not care about other people’s opinions; because at the end of the day, they don’t care about you- if they do, they would have encouraged instead of discourage you from realising your dreams!
People only care what they want from you.
Only you care what you want for you, because you are you.
People don’t know what you want.
People don’t want what you want.
That’s why you never get the validation you want from them. But that’s ok! You only need yours.
Look into the mirror and tell yourself YOU WILL GET YOURSELF WHATEVER YOU WANT, because you LOVE yourself.
Your life is about you.
Start living like it is.
