Subconscious mind- the master of your life
We left off at understanding that the subconscious mind controls everything in your life besides the mere act of initiation of thinking and actions. (if you haven’t learned it, click here.)
What does it mean by that?
That means it controls the way you think. The way you act. Which determine your fate.
That also means it controls the way you feel. Your natural reactions. Which define your character.
The mind determines your fate
Most of the people refer this part of the subconscious mind as “mindsets” or “beliefs”. And mindset simply means “what you take as truth”.
Take the growth vs fixed mindset as an example.
Growth mindset refers to the belief that one’s ability comes from training (acquisition), while fixed mindset refers to the belief that one’s ability is entirely innate (born with).
When you have a growth mindset, you will see failures as insufficiencies to work on. But if you have a fixed mindset, you believe you’re doomed.
And this way of thinking subsequently leads to the respective way of acting: the former chose to develop himself/herself, while the latter gave up entirely.
Who would make more progress in life? Who would be more confident? Who would enjoy life more?
You have the answer.
This is how your subconscious mind, or your mindset, determines your life outcome.
What you take as truth MATTERS. A LOT.
Many people VASTLY underestimate the power of mindset.
“It is just a thought, anyways. It can’t bother me.”
Yes, it’s a thought in essence; but a mindset, a belief, is coupled with subsequent actions.
Let’s say you learned from some motivation gurus saying that you are very powerful and you can achieve whatever you want in life.
If you merely listened to it, and did nothing about it, nothing will change.
But if you actually believed it and hence act accordingly, you and your life will be drastically different.
You pick up new goals. You carefully listen to your deepest desires. What do you want out of life? And you design a plan and execute it. And if you did the right thing in the right way (more in concept 4), you achieve it.
The thought translated into the reality.
Because you acted according to it.
And every single belief in you, what you taken as truth, has the same dramatic effect in your life.
The mind determines your character
Your character is defined by your natural responses. Your feelings. Your reactions.
What will you say about a person’s character if he/she sincerely feel happy for your success? A “good-hearted” person. How about one that shows jealousy? A “bitter” person.
What will you say about a person’s character if he/she lost a limb in an accident but still manage to smile and live proactively? “Positive”, “strong”. How about one that loses his/her job or went through a break up and started to overindulge alcohol to a point that everything else in his/her life crashes? “Negative”, “weak”.
You can’t use how the person act when there is no conflict of interest or everything goes smoothly in his/her life to learn about his/her character. Because no one likes to show up as a bad person. When everything does well, everyone seems to be a saint. But when conflict of interest or circumstances arrive- that’s when you should keep your eyes and mind wide-open- it’s time to identify the demons.
That said, character is NOT permanent. Not even close.
(But it is permanent if you don’t know you can + how to change it + change it, or just simply don’t want to change. Cuz it will take effort. So don’t really expect other people to “change”. If they aren’t right for you, just leave them. You can learn more about interpersonal relationships here.)
But why would you want to change it?
Well, let’s explore this in concept 4.
