Always start small

Whenever you want to establish a new habit, always start small.

The brain doesn’t like changes

“Humans are wired for comfort, not happiness.”

-Brianna Wiest

The human brain loves comfort. It hates any changes because it poses a risk to its survival. It’s job is to protect you from any possible danger.

Have you ever experience that when you first start doing something new, you think to yourself “oh I don’t like this”, but later down the line you actually like it? The first impression of “dislike” actually comes from the discomfort; it is your brain trying to remove you from the “potential threat” in action.

“Manipulating” your brain

The way to make something a habit, consistency is key.

And consistently fighting a battle with your brain isn’t a nice way because the fight will use up your willpower and leave you drained, and that’s not what we want.

Start from implementing a very small change- that your brain isn’t really aware of the change. I mean, it knows for sure, but if you make it so small– it doesn’t feel like a threat.

Treat it like a boiling frog.

As your brain gets more familiar with the thing, you add a little more. And little by little, your habit is established.

Try it today

I bet you have new habits that you want to establish but haven’t done that yet.

May be it’s starting to work out. You don’t have to increase your mental barrier by thinking about all these gym memberships or gym programs, maybe start from having a walk after dinner. Establish the habit of exercising regularly first.

May be it’s starting to read more. If you can’t start with a book, start with a blog. Make yourself read at least one post a day, say before bed.

May be it’s starting to learn how to cook. Start with the easiest one you can find on youtube- get yourself in the kitchen first.

Just remember:

Whatever long-lasting change you want to make, start small.
